Tips for Weight Loss
I had a teacher in high school who once asked the class, “Do you eat to live or live to eat?” I found the question extremely funny. I did not understand it then. From my understanding, I lived to eat… Let me explain that. If anything, delicious came to mind, I would rush to eat it. I “lived” my best! However, it wasn’t my best when I checked my weight and realized I was 86kgs at 29 years old. My blood pressure started shooting up, my heart paced faster especially when I walked or ran… I felt doomed and had to change that. These are some of the tips that helped me lose weight in a healthy way. Oh, I’m 66kgs now, Yippee! These tips are designed to help you shed those extra pounds in a healthy and safe way, without resorting to fad diets or extreme measures. By following these tips, you’ll be on your way to a healthier, happier you in no time.
- Stay hydrated

Water! They say water is life. Well, it is true! Drinking water is a very essential part of living. Research has shown that drinking an adequate amount of water can increase the number of calories burned, even while at rest. Drinking water before meals has also been found to reduce appetite, leading to a lower calorie intake and ultimately aiding in weight loss. Get this, anytime you feel thirsty, reach out for a glass of water.
When we are properly hydrated, our kidneys can function optimally, effectively removing waste and promoting overall detoxification. By keeping our body clean and free of toxins, we are providing it with the best possible conditions for weight loss.
- Detoxify your body

First thing in the morning, instead of eating that mouthful delicious breakfast, why not try and drink a glass of hot water lemon? Then, you can eat the delicious breakfast when hungry. I did this on my first weeks of weight loss and it helped me a lot. I still drink this to date, although I’ve added coffee and a little honey/ sugar to the drink. So, half a lemon, some honey/ sugar and coffee in one cup, first thing in the morning! The results will surprise you!
- Intermittent Fasting

I’m sure some of you have heard of this. With Intermittent fasting, you don’t eat for a period of time each day or week and when you do eat, you can eat anything you wish! There’s an app for this and you can choose “fasting for beginners”. Most celebrities swear by it, and so do I. Intermittent Fasting is safe for many people, but it’s not for everyone. Skipping meals may not be appropriate for you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have kidney stones, diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux or other medical problems, talk to your doctor before starting Intermittent Fasting.
- Walking

Believe it or not, walking might seem like the least effective method of loosing weight, but it is one of the most effective. Walk whenever you can! It is the easiest exercise that your body needs. Walking is important for weight control because it helps you burn calories. If you add 30 minutes of brisk walking to your daily routine, you could burn about 150 more calories a day. Of course, the more you walk and the quicker your pace, the more calories you’ll burn. So, instead of taking that matatu or boda-boda, if it’s not so far, just walk.
- Practice mindful eating

Remember the “live to eat or eat to live” phrase? This is where it comes in. Stop living to eat and start eating to live! This means, you eat a small or enough potion of food to keep you going/living. Before reaching for seconds or indulging in unnecessary snacks, pause and ask yourself if you’re genuinely hungry. Eat when you are hungry! Recognize the difference between physical hunger and emotional cravings, and address those cravings in a healthier way, such as engaging in a hobby or going for a walk.
